Year 7 Students
Pages associated under this menu are specifically targeted to Year 7 Students. As students who are mostly new to studying Japanese or have limited knowledge the focus of this page is introductory information and study tips on our topics.
Our approach
For the first term we will focus on learning the hiragana in its entirety. This means that lessons will focus on recall and writing. Students will be learning the hiragana in the traditional chart order which is a common method of introduction to the characters. Learning in chart order assists students in being able to recall the chart orally and understanding its composition, which comes in very handy when later learning grammar rules and conjugations.
As we learn the chart "families" students will be able to visit our page here and the linked pages to further consolidate their lessons. Students who have missed lessons will also have this resource to refer to for home study and to ensure they are up to date with their classmates. I encourage parents to visit this section to regularly keep abreast of the which characters the lessons have covered and even consult with your child so that you may learn this "secret" alphabet together!

Starting Points
To better understand some of the differences with the Japanese writing systems, I encourage you to take a look at the pages I have provided.
These explain how the systems have developed and give you an understanding of some of the terminology you will experience.
There are even some great tutorials on how to write the characters, or perfect them if you already know something about the characters from previous exposure.
Take a look at Writing Systems, Writing Hiragana and Kanji for some perspective.
